Usability Consulting

Briefly explained, usability is a set of attributes in the design process that is primarily concerned with improving how users interact with a website or application. It is defined by five components:

  • Learnability: How easy is it for users to accomplish basic tasks the first time they encounter the design?
  • Efficiency: Once users have learned the design, how quickly can they perform tasks?
  • Memorability: When users return to the design after a period of not using it, how easily can they reestablish proficiency?
  • Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how easily can they recover from the errors?
  • Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?

A typical scenario is to consult with a designer and/or developer looking to create an application or functional website. I ascertain the client’s goals and develop a usability plan from scratch.  Guided by these usability attributes, I test design or interface prototypes and report my findings. Often, I consult with design teams from other countries looking to position their services for the American market, or vice-versa.
